Over 10 years ago, I set out on this path with my three children. I’ve asked all the same questions — more than once.
I know how overwhelming it can feel. And to be honest, those doubts still show up now and then.
But through plenty of trial and error and integration, I’ve gradually built the mindset and acquired the tools that today allow me to guide my children with more trust, clarity and joy.
What I’ve learned?
It’s not about perfection or avoiding the hard moments.
It’s not about optimizing your child or yourself.
It’s not about skipping the discomfort.
It’s about leaning in — fully — to the unknown.
About staying present, even when things feel messy or unclear.
It’s about shifting our mindset, letting go of old conditioning, and discovering new ways of seeing our children — and ourselves.
It’s about growing a deep, steady trust in our role as guides… and in our children’s place in this world.
And ultimately, it’s about unschooling ourselves.
That might be the hardest — and most liberating — part of all.
I’ve walked this road. I’ve stumbled and gotten back up many a times. And now, I’m here to share what I’ve learned — so you don’t have to walk it alone.

About me
I am a proud father of 3 wonderful children, two boys 5 and 14, and one girl 11 years old. All of them went to forest kindergarten in Austria where we lived for more than 14 years.
The pedagogy practised there encouraged my children to get their “hands dirty” and to playfully explore their physical and mental boundaries at all times, inspiring mindfulness and a sense of connection with all living things.
When our oldest son reached school age we joined a local homeschooling cooperative, which we were a part of for 8 years. This is a family-led project, established more than 18 years ago, where approx. 20 families from the region pooled their resources to pursue their common vision of a more self-determined and holistic education for their children. The foundation of this homeschooling cooperative’s success was the freedom of the children to choose what and how they wanted to learn, and the active involvement of the parents as learning companions, guides and facilitators.
It was there that I first understood that a child’s motivation to learn can only be inspired but never be imposed from the outside. And it was also there that I realised how important it was for us parents to look at the imprints of our own schooling history and develop an awareness of how it affects our ability to empower our children on their educational journey.
Something else I learned in these years was how important it was for both the parents and the children to embrace the unknown and take conscious steps out of our comfort zone.
For us this step entailed leaving our well-known environment in Austria in order to travel more and to immerse ourselves into worldschooling communities around the world. Inspired by what we experienced on these trips, I ended up co-facilitating a nature-based worldschooling program in Thailand and organising my own worldschooling hub in Austria.
Ironically, I never planned to go down the path of alternative education. To be honest, at first I didn’t even know such a thing existed.😉
I myself had gone through highly competitive, traditional schooling systems with a strong focus on teacher-centred learning and performance based evaluation. After my graduation from the Vienna International School I got university degrees in 3 different European countries including the University of Cambridge in England.
During my tertiary education I experienced more of the same: mainly passive, other-directed learning driven by the paradigms of performance, pressure and competitiveness.
It was only with my first child’s enrolment in the forest kindergarten that I gradually began to understand, how profoundly an experience based, self-led education fuelled by intrinsic motivation could impact a child’s life. And the parents’ life, too. I don’t think I learned anywhere as much about myself, and about what really matters in my life, as I did on the home- and unschooling journey with my children.
Now that I have come this far I feel very passionate about helping others become the best possible unschooling parents they can be.
